What Does The Term "Bat Shit Crazy" Mean?
Your Uncle Daral, or perhaps your Aunt Mildred; it was in reference to them that you probably first heard the term "bat shit crazy."
It's a fun assembly of words. It's fun to say, brings a smirk to people's faces, and is the be-all-end-all description of people who are just flat out of their minds. Maybe even beyond all hope.
I love word origins, and occasionally like to dive into terms I find people using and dig around into finding out what they really mean or how they came into existence.
As a mentalist, I often come across people who's light seems to be pretty dim. Most of those people I find are the ones that believe what I do is "real." They just don't seem to get that it's nothing more than entertainment.
It seems to have derived from the term "bats in the belfry;" a euphemism for a crazy person or someone who is certifiably insane. A "belfry" is another name for the top of a bell-tower (like in an old Church), and according to The Grammar Dance the phrase refers to someone's head (the belfry) running amok with wild, winged, blind creatures (unpredictable, non-sensical thoughts, images, etc).
So what does "bat shit" have to do with it?
According to Quora, the term "bat shit crazy" indicates a person that is "so nuts that not only is their belfry full of bats, but so many bats have been there for so long that the belfry is coated in batshit."
While there seems to be a lot of explanations out there, I think this sums it up quite nicely. It speaks of being loony so long that the craziness has roots that run deep.
Some people may think of me as bat shit crazy. Maybe I am. If so, I have a lot of fun doing it.
I enjoy sharing my bat shit crazy self with the world. Come and see it for yourself and enjoy the madness right along with me.
Besides; "normal" is boring.
